Why is it called Spider Solitaire?

The usual explanation points to the eight foundations. To win, you build eight complete suit runs, and eight matches the eight legs of a spider. That is the most commonly cited reason for the name, though it is folklore rather than documented fact. The game dates back to the early 20th century and grew hugely popular after Microsoft bundled it with Windows. Some players also connect the name to the way long columns of cards hang down the board like a spider’s legs or web. Either way, the number eight is the thread everyone points to. Whichever story you prefer, the goal stays the same: clear all eight runs to the foundations.
